Nose and ear hair, and the right way to handle it.

A guy came in a while back with a genuinely sharp setup. Clean mid fade, beard lined up, good product in his hair. He'd clearly put thought into it. And there was one detail nobody in his life had ever told him about, because who would.

Nose and ear hair is the least discussed part of men's grooming and one of the most noticeable. Worth clearing up what's actually going on, and how to deal with it without hurting yourself.

First, it isn't a hygiene problem. It's biology and it happens to almost every man eventually. Over the years, testosterone gradually changes the fine, invisible hair in your nose and around your ears into thicker, darker, coarser hair. For most men it starts showing up somewhere in the late thirties or forties. You didn't get sloppy. Your follicles just changed the assignment.

For the nose, the rule is trim, never pluck. Nose hair is doing an actual job filtering what you breathe in, so the goal is to take down what's visible past the nostril, not to clear the place out. Plucking pulls the hair from the follicle and leaves an open spot in an area that's warm, moist, and easy to infect. It also hurts far more than it needs to. A proper rounded-tip nose trimmer costs very little, takes ten seconds, and won't cut you. Use it at the opening only, not up inside. And never wax the inside of your nose, whatever the internet tells you.

Ears are simpler. The hair worth trimming is on the outer rim and the little ridge at the front of the ear, and it responds well to the same trimmer or a quick pass from your barber. The one hard rule is nothing goes into the ear canal. Not a trimmer, not scissors, not a cotton swab. The canal takes care of itself.

Here's the part that explains why so many men miss all of this. You check yourself in the mirror head on, and head on is the one angle where you can't see any of it. Turn to the side, get some decent light, and look. That's the view everyone else has.

Frequency is easy. Every two to three weeks keeps it invisible, which is the same rhythm most guys are already on for a cut. Simplest option of all is to stop managing it separately and let your barber fold it into the appointment. It takes under a minute and it's a completely routine part of the job.

Nobody is going to tell you when it's time. That's the awkward truth of it, and it's why a good barber just handles it.
